Experienced Track and Field athlete? Or just want to learn more about the sport and try out some events? Now’s your chance. Saturday afternoon we will host Portland’s first indoor track meet for individuals including the following events:
Long Jump
Pole Vault
High Jump
Triple Jump
Hurdles
50 meter dash
Shot Put
300 Meter
600 Meter
1200 Meter
At an all comer meet, you report to an event, the volunteer coordinates a group of runners, and away you go. You do not always compete against your own age or gender, but the volunteer tries to match of athletes as best possible.
Pole Vault, High Jump, and the distance running events (300m and longer) will all take place on the Memorial Coliseum Concourse. All other events will be in the exhibition hall. Check back soon for more information!
The pole vault is a technical event that requires guidance and experience. The Learn By Doing Clinic on Saturday AM will get you started. Otherwise, don’t expect to Vault unless you have experience. If time permits, Rick Baggett may be able to help with some instruction in the afternoon, but again, this may be an event you only watch.
The 50 meter dash and hurdles are in the exhibition hall as will be long and triple jump. In this this event, we will measure the distance of little athletes from the spot they take off on the runway. Experienced jumpers will be expected to take off from the board. The format is that you show up, tell the volunteer you would like to jump. When two or three experienced jumpers show up, little kids will be asked to watch for 20 minutes while the experienced jumper put on a show. They it will be back to jumping as you check in.
